FAQ
The cost price is usually at or around the price of similar sized plastic storage sheds but in the case of Build-Well Sheds - an exclusive to ACE Hardware - they will last a quite a long time.
The warranty covers you for 20 years, but depending on your location and care of your shed you can expect more.
Plastic sheds usually only give you a warranty for up to 10 years. The warranty on a Build-Well Metal storage sheds gives you double the life for around the same initial investment.
Metal storage sheds invariably do take longer to assemble than plastic sheds. But they will double the life compared to plastic sheds and require less maintenance than wooden sheds. So, for those few extra hours spent in installing your Build-Well Metal storage shed it will pay for itself repeatedly with the extra life a metal storage shed gives you!

The shed industry really hasn’t changed much in the last 30-40 years. Just go look at ANY other brand of metal storage shed. You will find similar low star ratings. Why? Because for some people, the DIY experience of assembling a metal storage shed has been horrific and very time consuming.
Well, learning from that customer feedback, we launched Build-Well Metal storage sheds nearly 8 years ago and thought we had improved the assembly instructions. We added more pictures, we added color-coded parts. But we still got “help me emails” and “low star ratings.” We knew we needed to take a few steps back and “re-invent the process.” We needed to provide a better updated assembly experience to our Build-Well metal storage shed customers.
We NOW have the most comprehensive easy-to-use shed assembly instructions in the industry, unique to the Build-Well brand. We’ve broken down the major steps in assembling a metal storage shed,
These major steps are: START HERE, SECTIONS, and FINAL ASSEMBLY.
So, before you make a Build-Well Metal Storage Shed purchase, see for yourself if a DIY metal storage shed kit is for you. Please go review our new approach to assembling a Build-Well brand metal storage shed kit. Please check out our Build-Well Metal Storage Shed instruction manual <--here-->.
Our instructions do not pretend that metal storage sheds only take an hour or two assemble. They don’t. None really do. But, we spell it out for you step-by-step and we give you an estimate for how long each part of the assembly will take you. This way you can plan your time accordingly.
We continue to be Customer Focused and Customer Responsive. We will continue to make regular changes to our instruction manuals as a direct result of customer feedback – from people just like you.
Over the last 4-6 years we have listened to what customers are saying and we have made our instructions very easy to follow and have broken these down into 3 logical sections with detailed and timed instructions for each step of the way.
Each part is identified with a factory number and is color coded. The instructions contain a drawing as well as an assembly illustration for each step.
The most important thing you can do is to read through the Assembly Instructions before you start!
Each shed has its own assembly time. This time will vary according to your experience in assembly of kit type products.
Please refer to the instruction manuals of your chosen shed size where you will find detailed timing suggestions for every step of the assembly process.
We recommend two people for Step 3 of the assembly process.
Allow 8-10 hours for the shed assembly process (not including site preparation or anchoring)
If you cannot wait 24 hours, then try having another look at the assemble instructions for the parts giving you an issue.
One common issue we find is the customer not realizing the left and right walls are “angle cut” at the top. The top of these panels do not have the “click grooves” in the wall panel, the high side of each piece goes to the rear, later this gives the shed a sloping roof to allow rainwater run-off.
The top channels for the top of these side walls are specifically designed to go on the left or right walls and should not be interchanged, so double check the correct part goes on the correct wall sheets i.e., left channel piece on left wall and right channel piece on right wall.
If building a shed below the height of your garden fence or wall there should be no issues if you shed is lower than the wall or fence height.
If you have any doubts check with your neighbor, your nearest Ace Hardware store or local building authority.
For a free-standing shed, there is no doubt the best foundation for your Buildwell Shed is a reenforced concrete slab 4” thick and 4” inches wider and longer than your shed, with edges beveled top to stop rain- water ingress. A concrete slab will provide a solid level base for your shed to be anchored.
If you are building your shed against a house wall or fence, then there are much easier and lower cost options.
(Note: Most Buildwell Sheds particularly the low-profile horizontal sheds and the SLIM shed range have sloping roofs that fall from back to front, this forces rainwater away from your house or fence foundations).
The simplest and cheapest option is to prepare a flat level surface 4” wider and longer than your shed, where you will position your shed. Then place at each corner and at the center wall, front and back a 12-18” garden paver. Make sure these are level.
Once your shed is in position you can infill the shed floor with garden pebbles, these will keep your stored items high and dry. If you prefer to add a flat wooded floor then add a few more garden pavers in the down the center of your shed and then add a Buildwell Floor Frame Kit (available as an additional item from acehardware.com and these will act as bearers for the wood floor of your choice.
Buildwell Sheds are made from steel coated with a Zinc alloy rust inhibitor and a color paint coating. Painting is not required providing these coatings are not damaged or scratched.
If you prefer a different color, then Buildwell metal storage sheds can be painted with an exterior grade paint (acrylic is fine) designed for use on exterior metal surfaces.
Just like any exterior painted surface we recommend a regular wash down with clean tap water.
ALL SHEDS IN COASTAL AREAS EXPOSED TO SALT AIR SHOULD BE HOSED DOWN REGULARLY!
Both horizontal sheds and vertical sheds have their uses depending on what is being stored and why. Many tall sheds are underutilized and the headroom inside the shed is often not used, however where longer tools like a rake, hoe or spade are part of your garden tool kit then a taller shed would work best.

It’s important to remember that a metal shed is NOT temperature controlled. While they are built to be dry and stay that way, they do not control humidity levels in any way.
Additionally, leaks can happen. When choosing to store items in your shed, be sure they are things not likely to need a very controlled environment.
Here are some things to avoid placing in your shed: Photos, Paint and Glue, Clothing, Musical Instruments, Electronic equipment.
A word of caution if the food stuff is perishable a shed in direct sunlight will cause any feed to rapidly degenerate.
A storage shed inside a barn or farm building would be the best option.
Keep these clear of all items where possible.
Give your storage shed a wash from time to time, a good hose down with clean water will do the trick.
When used under eaves and properly anchored your shed will stay put if your house wall does.
Having said that because every house is different and every state has different climatic conditions we cannot predict the damage that may be caused severe weather conditions like hurricanes or tornados. In any event your shed would likely form part of your houses insurance policy.
We recommend 20lbs per square foot of roof area. We would recommend sweeping the shed roof of excess snow over 12 -24 inches deep.
